In his maiden speech in the parliamentary session of the Rajya Sabha, Dr Subhash Chandra welcomed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill and hailed it as the first step of many in eradicating poverty from India.
He quoted Former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi’s speech from December 28, 1995 where he had said that Smt. Indira Gandhi had herself told him that wastefulness and selfishness has broken the structure of society.
Stating that GST is only the first step of many Subhashji urged the centre to think beyond GST, ” ‘Out of the box’ and a great tax structure is the need of the hour. Today, we are discussing GST and how other countries in the world have launched it. This makes it important that we make a tax structure which is unique and becomes a model for rest of the world in future.”
He concluded by saying that, “Due to lack of Ease of Doing Business in our country, there is a lot of indirect tax that is born out of corruption, we should also address it. In the time to come, we need to think beyond GST, start a new taxation system & not just replicate the global ones.”
