The two day business summit, Advantage Assam, was held in Guwahati on February 3 and 4, 2018.

Shri Subhash Chandra delivered his address at the summit. He stated that it was elating to see so many states competing to attract investments for the betterment of their people.

Hailing the Modi Government’s Act East policy that focuses on infrastructure and economic development of the north-eastern states, Subhashji stated that earlier the government used to invest only for security purposes however this government it is also looking at economic development of the region too. He stated that the ASEAN Summit, where 10 heads of state were invited, would prove to be very beneficial for Assam and the rest of the north-east of the nation.

Elaborating on this point further he said that in the pre-independence and up to 1950-51, the north-eastern part of the country was very prosperous and that the Gross Domestic Product and per capita income was higher than it is now. This was because of the cross-border trade with the surrounding regions. However it has gone down since then because post-independence the government looked at Assam and the north-east and only concentrated on security issues giving certain grants and posting the Border Security Forces and paramilitary forces.

“They looked at the development of the north-east only through the ‘chicken neck’,” he said. Borders beyond the region were ignored, he added.

Speaking about the job situation in Assam, Subhashji said that because of the large influx of people from other states and from across the borders there has been lack of jobs and local populations have had cope with it. On an optimistic note he said that now it was time to change this. “Now, the population,  younger people, the talent has awakened and are ready to do things and they want to progress in their lives,” he said. They are ready to take on challenges and work towards prosperity again.

Blessing the state with a prosperous future, Subhashji recited a line from the popular song ‘Jahan Dal Dal Pe Sone ki Chidiya Karti hai Basera‘ and said that he has come to Assam to see where the rays of sun first hit Bharat‘s soil.

Congratulating Assam CM Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Subhashji hailed his dedication towards working for the betterment of the people of Assam and positioning the state as a ‘Expressway to ASEAN’ through this first ever Global Investment Summit in Assam.

Appreciating the immense natural treasures that the north-east has, he urged that Assam must focus on developing its tourism sector further.
